Obituary for Samuel Haygood

Samuel Emanuel Haygood was born February 3, 1932 to his parents Monticello and Izella Haygood in Sarasota, Florida. He was the fifth of ten children born to this union. Samuel received his education in the secondary school system of New York. In 1952, he was inducted into the Army during the Korean War and received an honorable discharge in 1954. Samuel was a driving force in the Willing Workers group, which helped purchase the House of God Church at 654 North Goodman Street pastored by Bishop Charles Campbell. He assumed many roles in the church that led to the victorious mortgage burning ceremony for the property in 1978.

Samuel was renowned for his kind and giving spirit, which he used to help those in need in his family, church, and community. He was known for bestowing thoughtful gifts, often in the form of specially prepared meals, which flowed from his extraordinary culinary gifting. Sam also established a practice of giving every graduate at The Love Fellowship Worship Center Church, under Pastor James Cooper, a monetary gift to honor their accomplishment. His kindness also extended to sharing the knowledge and wisdom he accumulated through his experiences — often in some of the most comical ways imaginable. He often lent encouragement during times of disappointment, offering optimism and hope. Even his critiques, though sometimes brutally honest, were given in love, with the goal being to help someone have a better future or life.

Samuel Haygood gave his life to Christ in April 1975 during an extended revival. His spiritual journey has taken numerous turns that ultimately led to the strong prayer bond he enjoyed with God. Sam could pray under any circumstances, for any reason, for anyone, at any time. He was known to lift his voice in deep
expectation of receiving from the promises of God. Even in his last days he lifted the nurses, doctors and caregivers at Rochester General Hospital in prayer that they would be blessed for their service and kept safe during this pandemic.

Samuel E. Haygood went to meet the Lord on Thursday, December 31, 2020. His memory will be cherished by his children, Denise Brown, Lisa Palmer, and Eric Curry; grandchildren, Leniece, Jeremy, Jahmani, Eddie, Kizzy, Chanel, Jalen, and Naia; and great grandchildren, Jazz Isaiah Gaskins, Jelaiagh, and Amaia. He also leaves to mourn his passing: sisters, Naomi (Charles) Campbell, Jaqueline (Leroy) Evans; brothers, John (Phyllis) Haygood, Cornelius (Hazel) Haygood; and a host of admiring nephews, loving nieces, great nephews, great-nieces, cousins, and friends from his extended and church families.
